Induction week
At the beginning of the semester we had a couple of exercises with Luis Cook mainly focused on how to generate ideas, based on a really small book called "A Technique for Producing Ideas by James Webb Young ", which separates the techniques in 5 stages: Collect data, organise data, digestion, an idea arrives unannounced and pressing the spark.
First worm-up exercise:
The first exercise was to make a spot for a toilet paper company in groups. The main requirements were that we only had an hour to finalise the idea and that the spot must be family friendly.
As we were a big team, we split us into little groups at the first 20 minutes to generate as many ideas as we could and then come all together to vote which one was the most interesting one. At the end, we end up with a mix between two of the ideas. As a result, we had a continuous panoramic shot about a little hippopotamus jumping between different types of dirt to finally jump into a lot of toilet paper, coming out of it clean and walking out of stage with a bit of toilet paper in the butt chicks.

Second worm-up exercise:
The second exercise was a bit more elaborated as we needed to do a live action short film no longer than 60 seconds, but no shorter than 45 seconds. Furthermore, they were three main requirements: theme, technique, and set. About the theme, the project needed to be about the DEATH (staged), it could be any kind of death: emotional, spiritual, physical, hopes and dreams... but something must die. In regard to the technique, we had to produce a shot without dialogue playing with a lot of different kind of shots such as wide, middle shot, close-ups, among other. And about the set, the film can only be done in the University, Ashton Court, the Pet cemetery, or our own homes without using any kind of additional lighting. By using the technique of word association, we came up with the idea that was our favourite: sandwich slaughter. |
It was a really fun project to do because the group worked really well together and we split the work really evenly. Our responsibilities were between Beatriz, who did the storyboard and some bits of the animation, John, who did the editing, sound and acting, and I did the other animated bits, the poster design, record the short film and help a bit with the storyboard.
What I really like about how we worked is that we were open to help each other giving feedback at all time. Furthermore, we were all working as a makeup artist adding bits of colour to John’s face, and I think John did a great job eating all kind of different flavour food to create the disgusting mouth
